Level 1 Kit Specification.

The equipment standard students are assessed against at a field session. Every clause states a capability, never a brand — and the reasoning behind each one is published so you can apply it to gear you already own, and argue with it if we've got it wrong.

No brand is required. NBWSR does not require, endorse, or accredit any manufacturer. Most clauses are met by gear people already own.

The session addendum controls. Registered students receive a session-specific gear addendum 14 days before start. Where it disagrees with this document, follow the addendum.

Bring what you have. Instructors check kit on day one and would rather see honest, used gear than something bought the week before.

Cutting Tools

L1-CUT-01

Fixed-blade knife

required

A fixed-blade knife with a blade 90–110 mm long, full tang, and a spine ground square enough to throw sparks from a ferrocerium rod. Carried openly in a retaining sheath.

Why

Length is a teaching constraint: shorter loses the leverage to process wood, longer loses the control to carve detail and starts duplicating the saw. Full tang because batoning is on the syllabus and a partial tang fails under a baton on the coldest day. The squared spine lets one tool serve two clauses, so a student who loses a striker still has fire. Fixed rather than folding is also the least ambiguous thing to carry in Canada — a fixed blade has no mechanism to assess against the Criminal Code's prohibited-device provisions, and worn openly it is not concealed.

L1-CUT-02

Sharpening capability

required

A means of restoring a working edge in the field — a flat stone, a diamond plate, or a compact guided sharpener.

Why

A dull knife is the more dangerous knife: it needs more force, and force is what turns a slip into a laceration. Students are assessed on maintaining an edge over a multi-day session, not on arriving with a sharp one.

Present at kit check; used during the cutting-tools module.

L1-CUT-03

Saw

required

A folding or bow saw with a blade of at least 175 mm, capable of cutting seasoned wood up to wrist thickness, with a lock that holds in both the open and closed positions.

Why

A saw does the shelter and firewood work faster and far more safely than an axe, which matters most on day one when students are tired and handling unfamiliar tools. The closed lock is the one that prevents injuries — an unlocked folding saw in a pack is a hazard to the hand that reaches in.

Shelter

L1-SHE-01

Tarp

required

A waterproof tarp of at least 3 × 3 m with no fewer than 12 attachment points and sealed or taped seams.

Why

Tie-out count, not area, determines how many shelter configurations a student can actually practise — a large tarp with four corner grommets teaches one shelter. Twelve points cover the A-frame, lean-to, diamond, and plough-point rigs on the syllabus. "Waterproof" is specified against "water-resistant" because the difference is a wet night.

L1-SHE-02

Ground barrier

required

A waterproof groundsheet or bivy bag sized to the sleeping area.

Why

Ground moisture defeats a sleeping bag from below, where its insulation is compressed and doing least work. This is the cheapest clause on the list and the one most often skipped.

Fire

L1-FIR-01

Non-consumable ignition source

required

A ferrocerium rod of at least 6 mm diameter, functional when wet and below freezing.

Why

Lighters fail in exactly the conditions that make fire necessary: cold enough that butane will not vaporise, wet enough that a flint will not spark. A ferro rod works soaked and at −30 °C. Diameter is specified because a thin rod is hard to use with cold or gloved hands, which is precisely when it is needed.

L1-FIR-02

Prepared tinder

required

A quantity of prepared tinder that takes a spark, stored dry and separately from the ignition source.

Why

A ferro rod is not a fire-starting method on its own — it is half of one. Students routinely arrive with a spark source and nothing to catch a spark. Stored separately so one soaking does not cost both.

Water

L1-WAT-01

Water carriage

required

Containers totalling at least 2 L capacity, at least one of which is rigid and freeze-tolerant.

Why

Two litres is the working figure for a day of field movement between resupply points. At least one rigid container because a frozen bladder hose ends hydration for the day, and a rigid bottle can be thawed against a fire or carried inverted so the ice forms away from the mouth.

L1-WAT-02

Primary water treatment

required

A filter rated to 0.1 micron or finer, cleanable in the field without tools.

Why

0.1 micron covers the bacteria and protozoa that matter in Canadian surface water. Field-cleanable without tools because a clogged filter that needs a backflush kit left at home is a filter that stops being used — and the real failure mode is not illness, it is a student quietly drinking untreated water rather than admit their filter stopped working.

Present and demonstrated at the water module.

L1-WAT-03

Backup water treatment

required

A second treatment method independent of the primary filter — chemical tablets, or the ability to boil.

Why

Every filter fails in a specific, predictable way. Hollow-fibre membranes are destroyed by a single freeze, which makes the primary clause actively unreliable on winter sessions. Independence is the requirement: a second filter of the same type is not a backup.

How it's checked

Present at kit check. On winter sessions this clause is checked first.

Navigation

L1-NAV-01

Compass

required

A baseplate compass with adjustable declination, balanced for the northern hemisphere.

Why

Declination across Canada runs from roughly 20° west to 20° east. A fixed-declination compass forces arithmetic in the field that a tired student will eventually get wrong, in the direction that matters. Hemisphere balance because a needle balanced for the south drags at Canadian latitudes.

How it's checked

Declination set for the session location at the kit check.

L1-NAV-02

Map, on paper

required

A topographic map of the session area at 1:50,000 or better, carried in a waterproof case or printed on waterproof stock.

Why

Paper does not run out of battery, shatter, or fail in the cold. The navigation module is assessed on map and compass alone; a phone is a supplement and never the answer to this clause.

Sleep System

L1-SLP-01

Sleeping bag rating margin

required

A sleeping bag rated at least 5 °C below the forecast overnight low for the session, and at least 10 °C below for winter sessions.

Why

Manufacturer comfort ratings are optimistic, and a tired, underfed student sleeps colder than a rested one. Margin is not luxury — a cold night costs the next day's judgement, and judgement is what the session is actually training.

L1-SLP-02

Sleeping pad R-value

required

A sleeping pad with an R-value of at least 3 for three-season sessions, and at least 5 for winter sessions.

Why

Ground conduction, not air temperature, is what ends a cold night — the bag's insulation is crushed flat underneath you and doing almost nothing. This is the single most common gear mistake we see at intake, and the most consequential.

How it's checked

R-value confirmed at kit check. No stated R-value is treated as below 2.

Clothing

L1-CLO-01

Base layer — no cotton

required

A base layer of wool or synthetic. No cotton next to the skin, in any season.

Why

Cotton holds water, loses effectively all insulating value when wet, and dries slowly — the combination that produces hypothermia in temperatures well above freezing. This is not a preference and it is not negotiable.

How it's checked

Checked at the kit check. Cotton base layers are replaced or the student stands down.

L1-CLO-02

Waterproof shell

required

A waterproof — not water-resistant — jacket and trousers.

Why

Cold rain is the most dangerous common condition in the Canadian bush, more so than deep cold, because it is survivable-looking right up until it is not. Water-resistant fabric wets out in sustained rain, which is the only rain that matters here.

Both pieces present at kit check.

L1-CLO-03

Footwear

required

Broken-in boots with ankle support, appropriate to the season. New, unworn footwear does not meet this clause.

Why

Blisters are the most common reason a student cannot complete a session, and new boots are the most common cause of blisters. "Broken in" means worn for several hours over varied ground, not worn around the house.

How it's checked

Inspected at kit check; students are asked how long they have worn them.

Cooking

L1-COO-01

Fire-safe cooking vessel

required

A metal vessel of at least 700 ml that can be used directly on a fire — stainless steel or heavy-gauge aluminium.

Why

Boiling is the fallback water-treatment method under L1-WAT-03, and a pot that cannot go on a fire removes that fallback entirely. Titanium and thin aluminium warp or burn through on coals in student hands.

Packs

L1-PCK-01

Pack

required

A pack of 45–65 L with a load-bearing hip belt that transfers weight to the hips.

Why

Personal kit plus a share of group equipment does not fit in 40 L, and a pack carried on the shoulders produces the fatigue and shoulder injuries we see most. Fit matters more than model — a well-fitted cheap pack beats a badly-fitted expensive one every time.

Lighting

L1-LIG-01

Headlamp

required

A hands-free headlamp with a red mode and a power source replaceable in the field.

Why

Hands-free because both hands are needed for everything done after dark. Red preserves night vision during the navigation exercises. Field-replaceable power because lithium cells lose most of their capacity below −10 °C, and a student needs a route back to working light that does not involve a charger.

How it's checked

All modes tested at kit check. Spare cells confirmed.

First Aid

L1-MED-01

Personal first aid

required

A personal kit covering blister care and minor wound care, plus any personal prescription medication, carried waterproof.

Why

Personal scale only. The instructor team carries group first aid, and NBWSR requires instructors to hold an external wilderness first aid certification — this clause does not substitute for either. Blister care is listed first because it is what students actually use, on nearly every session.

How it's checked

Contents inspected at kit check. Medication disclosed on the medical form.

Repair & Cordage

L1-COR-01

Cordage

required

At least 30 m of cordage rated to 250 kg or better.

Why

Thirty metres is what a full tarp rig plus guy lines actually consumes, with enough left for repairs and the knot work the syllabus assumes. Students who bring 15 m spend the shelter module short of line and learn the wrong lesson. Rated cordage is never a substitute for climbing rope.
