Policies

Privacy policy.

What we collect, why, who can see it, and how to make changes. Plain language first; formal terms second.

Last updated: April 30, 2026

1. Who we are

The National Bushcraft & Wilderness Self-Reliance Council of Canada ("NBSC", "we", "us") is a private educational organization based in Canada. This policy covers our public website (nationalbushcraft.ca), the course platform (courses.nationalbushcraft.ca), and any services that link to it.

2. What we collect

We collect only what we need to run the council. In practice that means:

  • Account information — your name, email, and an encrypted password when you register for a course.
  • Course activity — progress through modules, quiz results, and assessment scores, used to issue credentials and assist instructors.
  • Credential records — the credentials issued to you and the public-facing portion of those records (your name, level, issue date, status).
  • Payment metadata — handled by our payment processor (Stripe). NBSC does not store full card numbers.
  • Operational logs — minimal IP and request logs used for security and abuse prevention, retained for 30 days.

3. How we use it

  • To deliver the courses and field sessions you've registered for.
  • To issue, verify, and maintain certifications you've earned.
  • To respond to your questions and contact you about session changes.
  • To keep the platform secure and to investigate misuse.

We don't sell or rent your information. We don't use your course activity to build advertising profiles.

4. Public verification

A central purpose of NBSC is that credentials are verifiable. The verification page at /verify returns the holder name, level, issue date, and current status when a valid credential ID is entered. This is intentional and is the basis on which credentials are issued.

5. Who sees what

  • You can see and export everything in your account from your profile.
  • Instructors can see the course activity and assessment results of students in their assigned cohorts.
  • NBSC operations can see the same as instructors, plus issue records.
  • The public can see only the verification page response — name, level, and status — and only when a valid credential ID is entered.

6. Where data lives

Account, course, and credential data are stored in Firebase services (Firestore, Cloud Storage) operating in Canadian regions where available. Payment data is held by Stripe under their separate policy.

7. Your choices

  • Request a copy of everything we have about you.
  • Correct anything that's wrong.
  • Close your account; we'll retain credential issuance records for the credential's stated validity period (this is a regulatory and verifiability requirement).
  • Opt out of operational emails about course updates (we'll still send transactional emails — receipts, password resets, session changes).

8. Questions or requests

Email privacy@nationalbushcraft.ca or use the contact form. We respond to privacy requests within 30 days.
